flOOd!!! Please help as much as you can!!

This wednesday, I heard from my colleague that his home town, Segamat was seriously flooded. The water level is about 6ft, and his family (a 95-years-old bedridden grandma, his parents, sister and a maid) have to move to upstairs to survive with limited food and drinks. No electricity supplies either. He tried many ways to reach the rescue team but none of them are reacheable!! On the way home, I heard from radio that in some of the area, the water level rise to 10ft!!!

Lukily in the following morning, the water level had subsided. His uncle tried to purchase the mineral waters and bring to his family, but unluckily he only managed to get packs in small bottles, as those in 1.5 litres or more are sold out! Furthermore they had to wait until the army allowed them to enter to the flooded zone. Some volunteer group offered help and advised them to move out of the affected area as soon as possible, but unluckily his grandma is weak and rely on special bed and medication, so it's really hard to move her out...

Read his true story
here...

Can you imagine if that happened on you and your family? I read from the newspaper that the only 2 rescue sampan(or whatever) in Segamat were damaged, so they have to seek help from other places, which caused the delay. Can you imagine how many lifes might be in danger just because of this? Cold, hungry, fearful, darkness... Can you imagine that?

Please offer your help as much as you can. Small little things may bring warmth to them.

ACS Annual Dinner 2006

Last Saturday, I had experienced first company annual dinner in my life. It sounds like I've just recently graduated and this is my first company... No No No... Just perhaps I have no luck with my previous companies. ^-^

My first company only has annual dinner for the sports club. Meaning you have to pay few ringgit each month to join the club, and at the end of the year you will enjoy free dinner. But it's not grand at all. After that I worked as contractor for a medium-sized chinese company. So I was not entitled to attend the annual dinner. Until recently I joined my current company.... ^-^

Grand ballroom decorating with lots of balloons.

Bad experience with online booking

Recently I heard that there is a promotion for online booking from XXX Airlines, so I decided to try my luck, see if I could get a cheap air ticket for Chinese New Year.

I browsed thru the website, enter my destination, travel date and other relevant information, then searched for the lowest price I could get. Hurray!! The price is only RM 500++ for 2 persons, which is much cheaper than the phone booking and another airline. Happily, I entered all the passenger details as required, and also the credit card information. But then, it displayed the following error!!

We are sorry, the system is unable to price your selected flight(s). Please retry later.

From the message, it seems like that's a system problem rather than the wrong information being entered. I tried the second time, but still getting the same error. Then i decided to call the customer service officer.

Ring Ring....
A female Malay lady picked up the phone.

SHE: Good afternoon, how can i help you??
ME : Good afternoon. I get some error while trying to book the online ticket. The error is something like "cannot price your flight.... etc". I've tried out 3 times and still getting the same error.
SHE: Can i have your flight detail pls?
ME : Ok, 16 Feb, from KL to XXX. Erm.. can't remember the exact time of departure. it's a transit flight to Kuching in the morning, with the lowest fare.
SHE: Is that xx:xxam flight? Next time pls remember to note down the departure time. It's easier for us to search. (impatient tone)
ME : Oh, ok.
SHE: Can I have the passengers' name pls.
ME : (provided the passengers' name)
SHE: The transaction is not successful. Can you pls try again. Go to tools > Internet Options and delete the cookies. Then close your browser and try again. If still cannot, it could be because of the secure number of your credit card is invalid. Sometimes bank has technical mistake on this. If still cannot then you better check with your bank.
ME : Ok, thanks. I'll try again.

Following what she told, I cleared the cookies, closed my browser and tried again... Still the same!!! As I've similar online booking experience using the same credit card, I don't think it's the secure number problem. So I decided to call the customer service again. This time a Malay guy pickup the phone.

ME: (told him the problem in a similar way)
HE : Have you checked your browser whether it's compatible? You need to have IE version 6.

ME: Yes it's IE 6.0.
HE: Had you clear the cookies and tried again?
ME: Yes, I've tried at least 3 times.
HE: I think this might be the system problem. Can you please try 1 more time? If still can't then you have to do phone booking.
ME: Phone booking? Can i get the same fare as of the internet booking?
HE: The price that you can get is RM 400++ for 1 way.
ME: RM 400++ for 1 passenger??
HE: Yes, for 1 passenger.
ME: But I can get RM 500++ for 2 persons thru internet booking.
HE: Yes because this is the promotion for online booking.
ME: If this is the case, then what is the purpose for internet booking, since I can't even book the ticket online?? (unhappy tone)
HE: yeah sorry, can you please try 1 more time? It might be caused by the security code of your credit card as well. ME: I've used this credit card for other online transaction before, for eg: ABC, and I had no problem with that.
HE: This is because we have security. ABC doesn't have security for this. (HUH??!!)
ME: Actually this is my first time to do the online booking for your company. But I'm really disappointed with your service. I've tried many times but still getting the same error.
HE: .... (silent awhile) Can you please try 1 more time? If still can't then you have to do phone booking.
ME: Ok, i'll try 1 more time. Thanks.

Very very unhappily, I tried 1 more time, same problem persists. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....

Then I tried to use another credit card for the transaction, same problem!!! So I really don't think that it's caused by my credit card!!

==============================================================

The following day, my sister tried the same transaction using her credit card, again, same error. Then i decided to try again in my office. This time, I was stucked in different page with the following message:

Booking In Progress
Important: Please wait and do not close browser. If you do not receive any booking confirmation, please call our 24-hour Call Centre at XXXX-XX-XXXX(within Malaysia) / XXXXXXXXXXX (outside Malaysia) / email XXXX@XXX.com.my or contact your nearest XXX XXX office.

I waited for about 10 minutes, and it still showing the message. Well, I really don't think that it's still running, because I saw some of the image files showing the "X" sign (stop sign). So i decided to call up the customer service.

ME: good afternoon. I was trying to do internet booking just now, and I was stucked in the "booking in progress" page.
SHE: How long ago that you've seen this message?
ME: about 10 minutes ago
SHE: You have to wait for 20 minutes. The system is trying to validate the credit card transaction. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for the validation. (OMG!! 20 minutes for the validation!!)
ME: So meaning that I have to wait for another 10 minutes?
SHE: Yes.
ME: Ok, i'll do that. Thank you.

So I waited, waited and waited. 15 minutes passed and as expected it's still showing the same screen. So no choice I had to call them up AGAIN!!

ME: (told them the problem again)
SHE: The transaction is not successful. I think the security code of your credit card is invalid. Can you please check with your bank?
ME: Is the security code the last 3 digits at the back of my credit card?
SHE: No no, not that one. It's sent to you separately. You better check with your bank. (HUH??!! Like that meh???)
ME: But in the system, there's a sample showing that we have to enter the last 3 digits.
SHE: No no, it's not that one. You have to check with your bank.
ME: .... (dunno what to say liaw........) Ok, i'll check with them. Thanks.

This time, I decided to check with my issuing bank about the security code, and I was told that it's the last 3 digits that i've entered. That means i didn't enter a wrong code!!!
So I decided to try 1 more time. I cleared the cookies, re-open the browser, and did the same transaction.

......
.........
............
...............
..................
.....................

SAME PROBLEM!!!

.....................
..................
...............
............
.........
......

Not giving up, I called them up AGAIN!!! I amnot sure whether it's the same person who answered the call, so I decided to repeat my problem and see what kind of story she/he's going to tell!!

SHE: (told me the same reason)
ME: The pin code is the last 3 digits at the back of the credit card right?
SHE: No no not that one. (I guess she's the same person)
ME: But I've checked with my bank, and they told me that is the one. They said there's no other security code. (very unhappy tone)

................
......................
.............................
doo..................................................

OMG she just hanged up the phone like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That night, I called 1 of my friends who has booked the online ticket succesfully with the same airline recently.
As a result, he told me that:
1. We have to use streamyx. (Anybody knows why? Any difference?)
2. He asked me to enter my IC no in the "passport no" field. (note that there's is no field to fill in the IC no, which is a bit weird.)
Then as for the phone number, use the house phone instead of the hand phone.

My question:
1. Perhaps this solved my previous problem of being stucked in the "Booking in progress" page. Because my office is not using streamyx. BUT, how come they can't give this kind of proper and reasonable solution?

2. If the failure is caused by this, shouldn't the system prompt a proper informative error message, or even better if they label the field properly?

Ok, cool down. Let me try again. Following the same steps, and.... finally...

STILL THE SAME ERROR!!

OK, I GIVE UP!!!

tEam bUilding, PD (Part III) - F1 Go-Kart

We had Go-Kart in the following morning. After a nice breakfast, we started our racing game!! We were arranged in 2 teams. Each team member was first be given a lap around the race track to familiarize ourselves with the go kart and also the layout of the track. Then we raced for 3 laps before changing drivers, but before the change of first 3 drivers, we must first solve a jigsaw puzzle before the next drivers drives off.
One funny thing is that each of us had to wear a shower cap provided by the resort due to hygiene purpose when wearing the safety helmet. All of us looks funny when wearing that. Hahaha...

The track length is 400m.

My turn!! ^-^V

**Cheese**

tEam bUilding, PD (Part II) - Treasure Hunt, Obstacle course and Telematching

The first game for the team building is Treasure Hunt. Since 2 cars lost their direction, we only had 13 participants for the game, ie. 3 - 4 persons in a team. We were required to find out the clue in a white paper and answer the question or find out the treasure as mentioned. Then go to the next destination for the next clue. Luckily my team is the winner!! We won ourselves a T-shirt and key chain. ^-^ V

After our lunch break, we had the obstacle and telematching courses. The obstacle course is quite challenging and interesting. There are a total of 20 obstacles in different stations. Each team must work together to clear all the following obstacles safely and also in the shortest time:

  1. 2ft singe bar - jump across
  2. 6ft double bar - climb up /down the bar
  3. swinging bridge - walk across and balancing
  4. tyre king - rawl through
  5. crab walk - ran through balancing
  6. loft tunnel - crawling through
  7. staggered ladder - climb up/down
  8. 6ft wall - individual climb across
  9. 8ft wall - team effort - climb across
  10. water hazard - jump across
  11. rope netting - climb up/down - across
  12. loft vertical rope - climb down hill
  13. single beam - walk across
  14. tarzan swing - swing across water hazard
  15. monkey rack - swing across
  16. barb wire - crawl through under bard wire
  17. single cable - walk across on cable
  18. barb wire 3ft - duck walk across
  19. log riding - sit sliding along the log
  20. jump over ditch - jump across

*Challenging obstacles are in BOLD.

Don't know what does it called..??

Log riding. This is easy for guys...

Tarzan swing...

Barb wire

8ft wall

6ft wall

loft vertical rope

After the obtacle course, all became dirty and some of us are injured.

After the obstacle course, we had telematch. This is much more easier if compared with the obstacle course. Most of us are tired and exhausted. Luckily there's only few games for the telematch, and doesn't required much energy. We had about 2 hours for bathing and resting before our BBQ dinner started.

Our dinner... the food looks nice but mostly tasteless.

tEam bUilding - Eagle Ranch Resort, PD (21-22 Oct 06)

I've just joined my current company for less than 2 months, but luckily I had the chance to join the team building course in Eagle Ranch Resort, Port Dickson for 2 days 1 night. There are a total of 21 participants in 6 cars, which 2 of the car drivers decided to depart earlier to avoid the traffic congestion due to long DeepaRaya Holidays. We departed from Tropicana at 6am, and reach Port Dickson within 1.5 hours. The event started at 9am, so we still had plenty of time to enjoy our dim sum breakfast. After the breakfast, then we continue our journey to find the Eagle Ranch Resort.

The reception of the resort

Out of my expectation, the resort is not near to the beach. It's located at 14th mile, Port Dickson, and offers a unique "Home on the Ranch" stay amidst rugged 28-acre surroundings with beauty of the natural. Choice of accomodation at the resort varies from kampung houses, log cabins, paddock chalets and tepees to dormitories.

Log Cabin with open-to-the-sky waterfall showers

Red Indian Tepee

Kampung houses over the fishing pond

There are variety of sports and recreation activities, but I would just name a few:

  1. paintball
  2. horse riding
  3. Go-Kart
  4. 20 Item obstacle course
  5. treasure hunt
  6. telematch
  7. flying fox
  8. sea rafting
  9. jungle trekking
  10. archehry

Hmm.... Finished the introduction of the resort, next I'll blog about the activities that we'd participated, which is full of fun and challenge!!

Day Trip to Malacca (14 Oct 06)

It's years ago since my last visit to Malacca. Having planned for weeks, finally I stepped into the territory of this historical ancient town again with few of my good friends. We departed from KL at 9:30am, and reached there within 1.5 hours with normal speed. Once reached there, we straight away went to the famous chicken rice shop for our lunch. There are few shops famous of the chicken rice scattering around the "Red House" (direct translation from Chinese =.=), but we chose "Chung Hwa" which is an old shop at the corner. It's just opposite of the OCBC Bank, if not mistaken.
After the meal, we had a walk near the "Red House". We went to Christ Church, St. Paul's Church, A'Famosa and People's Museum which are just within the walking distance. All of these are the hallmark of Malacca.

Christ Church since 1753. A must-visit famous place.

Line of trishaws passed by while we walked along the antique street. This is one of the promotional event of DiGi.

Thanks to our neighbouring country, it's really hot due to the haze. So we decided to have the famous cendol, and also tried out some of the nyonya food. Unfortunately we were still full and only managed to try out 1 dish which is called the "Ayam Pongteh" - Miso Soy Chicken. It's actually the chicken which is cooked with preserved soy beans [Miso], dark soy sauce, sugar and other ingredients.
After that we walked along the old shops, and were attracted by 1 of the art gallery.

Tang's Art Gallery

Each of us bought a Chinese stamp with our names, which costs us around RM40-50 each. The writings are really nice. The business is actually operated by 3 brothers who are quite friendly. They had even drawn a map to guide us to some of the famous food around the area, including the "peanuts soup", "satay celup" and fried oysters. Hmm.. We had really eaten alot. ^-^

Nice fried oyster. Even much better if can put more oysters. It's a long queue and we waited for about 30 minutes before getting our food.

Hmm.... A very nice trip, just eat, walk, eat, walk and eat... ^-^

mOOn cAke fEstivaL

How did I celebrate? Initially planned to have big meal with my housemates. But I worked late that day... =( 5pm... 6pm... 7pm... Still in the office. sigh...
While waiting for my team lead to solve some server issue, I took some photos with my teammates.

Finally we can leave at 7:10pm... phew!!! Anyhow I was late for the dinner, so have to cancel the plan. Eventually 'yum cha' with my 'old' friends.

In the following day there was a belated celebration in church. Pot luck, lanterns, moon cakes... It has been years that I didn't manage to enjoy this kind of atmosphere. ^-^

Can you see the Jade Rabbit or Chang-Er on the moon?? ^-^

It's pArtY time!!

Wow It's really great to end my last day in such a nice nice way. ^-^ No regret to extend few more days to work in such a terrible project. Yeah it's our client who organized a get-together session with dinner + karaoke. The "K room" resides in my client office block is indeed much much nicer than what I've expected.

K Room

We had beers, red wines, karaoke competition, dance... Guess who's our Dancing King? :)

Team 3 members

Cheers!! ^-^

flOOd!!

It's my last day working in Masjid Jamek area, and unfortunately also my first time in my life to witness a flood!! This area is indeed being well-known as black area of flood. After few hours of non-stopping heavy rain, it just happened all of sudden!! I did hear of some kind of alarm, but not pretty sure whether that's the operation of flood alarming system. Heard that the Putra LRT system also down due to the disaster. As step of precaution, most of the office properties were moved to the upper stair. I was very lucky for having a 'party' in my client company that night, so not being caught in the flood. Anyhow, this is indeed a very memorable last day working here...

It's my last day being here...

Finally it’s my last day in my current company. Have been waiting for almost 2 months and eventually here it comes!!! I keep asking myself, what have I learnt from this project? Well, perhaps I’ve learnt how important a good project management is, as well as a well-design system. Most of the developers will feel annoyed, upset, demotivated, and uncommitted when working on a badly design system with messy, dirty and unnecessary codes. The condition worsened if the project is not well planned. These are also the main reasons that I chose to leave this project, despite of all the attractive packages being offered.

Feel released, and joyful, but at the same time, a bit reluctant to say good-bye to my fellow colleagues. The greatest thing I gained from here is the friendship build among us. Perhaps it’s the tough situation, tones of complaints and some of the events being organized which tied us together. Of course I won’t forget of the great contribution from our great developers who had written LTK which bring us much more closely to each others. We laugh, we cry, we complain, we discuss, and we play here… it’s the place of sharing!

For sure I’ll miss all of you... May God bless you all! Cheers!!!

My Big Day!!!

Yeah it’s my birthday…!!! I’m glad to have groups of friends celebrate with me. One of the memorable celebrations is my Sepang trip with my fellow colleagues. Driving in 3 MyVi, it took us around 1 hour to reach Tanjung Sepat, Sepang. Our beloved tour guide brought us to a nice beach. Wow!! Growing in a small town near to the beach, I do miss the beach a lot. Unfortunately I didn’t bring my camera along, thus miss the opportunities to take photos of the beautiful scenes. Here I ‘borrow’ some of the photos taken by wAntAn:

After a short tour to the beach, we went to the seafood restaurant which is near to the Lovers’ Bridge.

Lovers' Bridge

This is the most beautiful sunset I’ve ever seen.

Thanks to MoonCake for treating us LOBSTER!!

Team Building Program

With the purpose to build team spirit, my client company has organized a Team Building Program on 28 July in Selesa Hill Homes Resort, Bukit Tinggi. This is a full day event with lots of fun activities and games. We drove there in several cars and unfortunately 2 of our cars drove to the wrong direction. We almost reached Bukit Tinggi Resort before we were informed of our mistakes. Thus we were rushing for our breakfast before the program ‘officially’ started. We were arranged into several teams, and mine is BLUE. Yeah, we named our team “Blue Busters”!!

For the first activity, we were required to find a partner from different company and to get know of his/her better by asking few questions like what is his/her nickname, how is her/his ideal partner like, any embarrassing moment etc. Well I don’t actually get used to tell these kinds of things to someone whom I’m not closed to, and also in front of so many people. But I did enjoy of others’ stories. :D Following this are a series of games in teams. I did really enjoy all the games and there are full of fun!!

We had river trekking for the afternoon session. Being guided to the jungle, each of the team was given an egg and a glass of water on tray. We are required to hold these while playing games without breaking or falling any of them. That is the challenging part of the game! By helping each others, all of us were managed to finish all the session.

Unfortunately my team did not win the game. Anyhow we had done our best!! The program ended by prize giving, speech and camera sessions. We were given a certificate of participation.
